He is the son of the only local physician, Isidor Burakh, and spent the last several years away from his hometown in the capital city, where he received medical training as a surgeon. The town culture represents a mix of Russian culture from shortly before the 1917 Revolution and the ancient traditions of the steppe inhabitants, which include numerous strange customs and superstitions.
